Christians of ancient times used a secret symbol to indentify fellow believers as they faced great persecution. That symbol was called the Icthus. The Big Fish Missions Logo was created to combine a lifelong interest in the ocean and sharks (which are Fish) with our faith in Christ, our own personalized "SHARK-thus" if you will. It is an eye-catching, unique and bold way to promote Jesus Christ. Our logo is made to boldly go into the roughest waters of the mission field and take a bite out of satan!
Meaning of the letters, "IXOYE": they are the first letter from each word in the statement, "(I) Jesus (X) Christ (O) God's (Y) Son (E) Savior" written in Greek. These letters are commonly seen inscribed inside the outline of a fish which is referred to as an Ichthus, the Greek word for fish. The Big Fish Missions logo features these letters written inside of the silhouette of a Great White Shark.
A Real "BIG FISH" Story
"Now the Lord commanded a great fish to swallow Jonah, and he was in the belly of the fish for three days and three nights."-Jonah 1:17
(Jonah was called by God to go on a "mission trip" to Nineveh, however he went the other direction. For his disobedience,
God commanded a great fish to swallow Jonah whole. Jonah was in the belly of this "Big Fish" for three days and three nights.
Jonah cried out to God for forgiveness and even praised God in the middle of his ordeal. He decided if given another chance, he would obey God. God then directed the "Big Fish" to spit him out on shore. Jonah then went straightway to Nineveh.) DONT BE A JONAH!!!
Was the "Big Fish" a Shark?
Some shark scientist believe that the first recorded shark attack can be found in Jonah 1:17. (see "Great White Shark" by Richard Ellis and Dr. John McCosker 1991 and also "South Africa's Great White Shark" by Thomas Peschak and Michael C. Scholl 2007
) While we do not claim the Scriptures specifically name the fish as a shark, we do know that science reinforces this possibility by the following facts:
- There has been extensive research conducted on Great White Shark populations in the Mediterranean.
- Research has shown very large sharks in the range of 18 feet and larger have been found to be quite common all throughout the Mediterranean Sea.
- Sharks have the ability to retain prey items undigested in their stomachs for long periods, even more than three days and nights.
- A large Great White Shark is certainly capable of swallowing a person whole.
- Through the fossil record of shark teeth we have evidence of a shark, Carcharodon Megalodon, existing and they were estimated to reach lengths of 60 feet.
- The direct translation of verse 1:17 says God commanded, not created, the "Big Fish" to swallow Jonah, meaning the fish was probably already in existence.
